Pilates Myth Busting: You Need to Wear Tight Clothes During Pilates

Nope.

First, your teacher should be able to teach you no matter what you are wearing. As a teacher, I look at the body as shapes, then I look at different points on the body to see if an area can use some support(s) or maybe I add a challenge for FUN!

Second, it's your choice what you wear. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and are able to move your body in the clothes you have on. It provides a better experience.

Will my clothes get caught in the equipment?

Solid question!

I know some teachers find concern around baggy clothing and springs. Overall, and in my opinion, there shouldn't be a cause for concern. It would need to be a perfect storm of equipment, exercise, and clothing.

  • I have seen a pair of super long, split leg, pair of gaucho pants get caught in the springs during footwork on the Reformer. My student and I both looked at each other and decided those were not the right pants for Reformer day, but not just because they got caught in the springs.

  • We still had an amazing session on the Reformer without the student losing their pants. I call that a win.

For the most part, the springs on other pieces of equipment shouldn't really plague you no matter what you wear. I've had students in long sweatshirts, oversized t-shirts, and baggy pants. No issues, with the exception of the interesting gaucho incident. Again - no harm came to the student nor the gauchos.

All in all, if you are concerned, you can always practice your Mat Pilates!!!!

If you work with me - you can wear pajamas for all I care. If you are moving and feeling good (and not feeling restricted or annoyed by your clothing) - then that's all that matters! I want us to have some fun together!

Now, I personally love wearing tighter clothes when I know I'll be doing certain exercises. I like my clothes to stay where they are. I don't like pants that slip down and I don't like shirts that slide up. And I really love it when my clothes stay in place when I'm doing exercises like Jack-Knife, Short Spine, Tower, Airplane, etc (anything where my butt and legs go up). This is for my personal comfort!

I hope you move forward and have a comfortable, non-restrictive, and happy practice!!!
